Childcare Funding Changes: What Parents Need to Know in 2026

Childcare funding has changed significantly since 2024. In 2026, the useful question is not what is coming next, but which support applies to your child, your income, your work situation, and your childcare provider.

What Parents Can Check

  • Free childcare hours: eligible working parents in England can get 30 hours per week for children aged 9 months to 4 years old, for 38 weeks of the year.
  • Tax-Free Childcare: eligible families can get a 20% top-up on payments into a childcare account, up to the scheme caps.
  • Universal Credit childcare costs: working Universal Credit households may be able to claim back up to 85% of registered childcare costs, subject to caps and assessment rules.

The Rules That Cause Most Confusion

  • You can use Tax-Free Childcare with free childcare hours, but not at the same time as Universal Credit or childcare vouchers.
  • Free hours may be stretched over more than 38 weeks if your provider offers that pattern.
  • Your provider must be registered or approved for the payment route you want to use.
