Stretching 30 Funded Hours Over the Year: What Will Your Nursery Bill Look Like?

In England, 30 funded hours means 1,140 hours across 38 weeks for a full eligible year. A provider may spread those hours over more weeks, giving fewer funded hours each week. That can smooth an all-year bill, but does not increase the annual entitlement.

How many hours would I get each week?

The early education statutory guidance allows an entitlement to be stretched over up to 52 weeks. These calculations assume a full 1,140-hour year, continued eligibility and a provider offering the pattern. Divide the annual hours by the funded weeks.

The decimal figures are rounded for illustration. Ask the provider how it allocates the hours in practice, including partial weeks, closures and rounding. Starting partway through a year does not give you a full year’s hours to use immediately.

Worked example: a 51-week nursery place

Imagine a child attending 30 hours a week for 51 weeks. That is 1,530 attendance hours. Subtracting 1,140 funded hours leaves 390 paid hours annually. At an assumed £8 for each paid hour, the cost is £3,120 before extras. This is our simplified example, not a standard nursery tariff.

With term-time funding, that same example has 30 funded hours during 38 weeks and 30 paid hours during each of the other 13 weeks. With stretched funding, roughly 7.65 hours are paid each week. The annual paid hours are the same under these assumptions, while the timing differs.

What would the monthly bill and top-up be?

If the nursery spreads the illustrative £3,120 paid-hours bill into 12 equal invoices, each is £260. With no account balance and sufficient Tax-Free Childcare allowance, you deposit £208 and the government adds £52. A nursery billing for actual attendance may produce different monthly invoices.

Enter the actual remaining eligible invoice in our calculator. Do not enter the value of hours already funded by the council. Include your available account balance and top-ups already used.

Can the nursery charge for meals or funded hours?

The government guide to charges distinguishes optional extras and paid additional hours from funded provision. Parents can still access their free place without paying optional extras, and providers should offer alternatives. If a provider insists on extras with no alternative, speak to the council.

What should I ask before choosing a pattern?

  • Which weeks and sessions receive funding, including holiday and closure periods?
  • How many funded hours are allocated each week and how is rounding handled?
  • Are invoices levelled monthly or based on actual paid hours that month?
  • What extras are optional, and what are the alternatives?
  • How will funding be allocated if I change provider, split care or lose eligibility?

Confirm the pattern in writing. For an upcoming start, check our January 2027 application guide as well as the provider’s own deadlines.
