Start Christmas childcare planning with the dates and hours you need, then check the support available. In England, some school-age children can access free Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) places. For paid care, eligible families may be able to use Tax-Free Childcare or Universal Credit childcare support.
For Christmas 2026, England’s HAF eligibility guidance uses the targeted free-school-meal criteria, covering pupils in Universal Credit households with annual household earnings of £7,400 or less. The wider free-school-meal expansion from September 2026 does not automatically bring every newly eligible child into HAF.
Universal infant free school meals alone do not qualify a child. Some children previously covered by transitional protections may also no longer qualify. Councils have limited discretion to support other children, so ask your school or council to check your current eligibility rather than relying on a previous holiday’s booking code.
Check each listing carefully. Christmas delivery can be flexible, including family events or trips and other support alongside club sessions. A free activity is not necessarily a full day of childcare where you can leave your child. Ask about session times, whether a parent must stay, meals and any support your child needs.
Write down the gaps between the booked session and your working hours, allowing for travel and collection. Include bank holidays and days when the club closes. Planning those gaps first helps you compare the actual cost of different bookings.
Use your council’s website and search for its Christmas HAF programme. Ask your school if you need a booking code, referral or eligibility check. There is no single booking date to use across all councils.
For example, Worcestershire’s Christmas 2026 bookings are advertised to open at noon on Wednesday 18 November. That is a local example, not a national deadline. Check your own council’s page for dates, age ranges and available sessions.
| Support | How to plan the cost |
|---|---|
| A funded HAF place | Confirm the free session and any separately booked paid hours. |
| Tax-Free Childcare | Check eligibility, the club’s scheme registration and your remaining top-up allowance. |
| Universal Credit childcare | Check the childcare-cost rules, evidence and reporting dates before booking. |
Tax-Free Childcare can pay an approved holiday club that is signed up to the scheme. It is available across the UK, subject to eligibility, while the HAF guidance above applies to England. A club offering free HAF places is not by itself proof that its paid places accept Tax-Free Childcare.
If you receive Universal Credit, check its childcare-cost support for additional eligible care. You cannot claim Universal Credit and Tax-Free Childcare at the same time. Do not include a free HAF session as a childcare cost you have paid.
Suppose you book four paid days at £40 each: a £160 bill. With no existing childcare-account balance, enough remaining allowance and eligibility for Tax-Free Childcare, a £128 deposit receives a £32 top-up. These are illustrative prices, not a forecast of local fees.
If you already have £60 available in the account, the shortfall is £100: you deposit £80 and receive £20. Use your actual paid invoice, balance and top-ups already received in the calculator. Check each child separately if you are booking for siblings.
