Yes. Tax-Free Childcare can pay for breakfast clubs, after-school clubs, holiday clubs and play schemes when the care is provided by an approved provider that has signed up to the scheme. Starting school does not automatically end your child's eligibility.
| Cost | Usually covered? | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast club | Yes | The school or provider must be approved and signed up for Tax-Free Childcare. |
| After-school club | Yes | It must be qualifying childcare, not simply a standalone lesson. |
| Holiday club or play scheme | Yes | Check the specific club is registered or approved and appears in your childcare account. |
| School meals or uniform | No | Ordinary education and school-day costs are not childcare. |
| A combined childcare fee | Sometimes | Extras such as food or trips can be covered when the provider includes them within an overall childcare charge. |
A club being run at a school does not by itself make every charge eligible. Before booking, confirm both of these points:
Read our guide to what counts as approved childcare if you are unsure about a childminder, school club, sports camp or other provider.
Sometimes. HMRC allows online payment providers to process Tax-Free Childcare, but the school or club and its payment platform must have the facility enabled. Ask the provider for its exact payment instructions before adding money to your account.
A platform may list childcare alongside school meals, trips and other items. That does not make every item eligible. Use Tax-Free Childcare only for the qualifying club or childcare charge and pay unrelated school costs separately.
Tax-Free Childcare is for approved childcare, not the cost of your child's compulsory education. It should not be used for:
The official guidance makes a useful distinction for extras. Food, trips or other extras may be covered when they form part of the overall childcare cost charged by an approved provider. A separate school meal or school-day trip is not covered.
Yes, if your family still meets the eligibility rules. Support can continue until 1 September after your child's 11th birthday, or until 1 September after their 16th birthday if they are disabled. This is why the scheme can remain useful for wraparound and holiday care long after nursery ends.
You must still reconfirm your eligibility every three months. See the guide to Tax-Free Childcare reconfirmation deadlines so a missed date does not interrupt a term's club payments.
For every £8 you add, the government normally adds £2, up to the remaining limit for that child's three-month entitlement period. If an eligible after-school club invoice is £240 and you have no account balance, you would usually add £192 and receive a £48 top-up.
