UK Childcare Support in 2026: What Families Can Use Now

A previous version of this guide looked ahead to 2025. The expansion has now happened, so this page has been updated to explain the support families can check and use in 2026.

Main Support Options in 2026

  • Free Childcare for Working Parents: eligible working parents of children aged 9 months to 4 years old can get 30 hours per week for 38 weeks of the year.
  • Tax-Free Childcare: the government adds £2 for every £8 you pay into the account, up to £500 every 3 months per child, or £1,000 every 3 months for a disabled child.
  • Universal Credit childcare costs: eligible working households can claim back up to 85% of registered childcare costs, subject to monthly caps.

What Is Not True

There is no separate new childcare tax relief that parents claim through a tax return. For most families, the practical routes are funded hours, Tax-Free Childcare, Universal Credit childcare costs, legacy childcare vouchers if already enrolled, or student/education support where relevant.

What To Do Next

  1. Check your provider offers the hours and sessions you need.
  2. Confirm the provider accepts Tax-Free Childcare payments.
  3. Compare Tax-Free Childcare with Universal Credit before switching schemes.
  4. Browse the latest childcare support articles for more detailed guides.
